Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a creator and friend in the VR space. I know a bit about 3D modeling and coding, and have used that experience to develop content for public, private, and collaborative VRChat projects. I'm also a bit of a gamer and have my own game development project in the works!
When and how did you get into social VR?
I got into social VR in late 2020. I discovered VRChat through a fun VRChat roleplay channel on Twitch. The Twitch channel reminded me of a time when I was younger where I would play online PC games such as World of Warcraft, often ignoring the main objective of the game and just exploring environments or using in-game text chat to socialize. Some of these games even had user-generated content that you could download and explore with friends, including avatars and worlds, similar to VRChat. I had recently started learning how to create 3D models using Blender, and already had experience with coding and the Unity game engine, so getting into VRChat was a perfect mix of nostalgia, opportunity to practice and learn skills, and self-expression.
What interests you most about social VR?
I think the most interesting thing about social VR is the idea that we can create our own space, interact with it, and express ourselves without the inconveniences of ordinary life. The way we interact with virtual worlds is unique and I like to take advantage of that. You'll often find me engaging in parkour, backflipping off the edges of buildings and cliffs, and getting up close and personal with virtual hazards.
“Having the right avatar at the right time is a great way to entertain others and recontextualize an environment, and I love being able to express that.”
What is your go-to way of expressing your creativity?
I like expressing myself the most through avatars because I feel like they let me channel certain feelings in an interesting way. For example, certain types of humor just hit different when it comes from a particular avatar. Having the right avatar at the right time is a great way to entertain others and recontextualize an environment, and I love being able to express that.
Who or what inspires you?
I think music inspires me a ton. If I'm not feeling good about a project I'm working on, I often just throw on some music to keep myself on track.
What is the origin of your username?
It's a mix of an old name I used to go by, with something new. Everyone just calls me Doodle, and I mostly associate the name "doodledrop" with one of my avatars, which is a sentient drop of water. I really vibe with virtual environments that have water as a main feature or theme, so having it as a part of my virtual persona feels right as well, hence the “drop.”
How do you feel about the future of VR?
I feel like VR has a lot of interesting ways it could grow as more people become acclimated to the technology. I'm optimistic, but I can imagine a future where the current concerns of VR are not addressed as it continues to grow.
